Welcome to our June addition of the Nelson Trout Fishing (Craft Beer & Craft Chip) Club.

We have past the shortest day and I am now counting the sleeps to opening day. Not much has been happening on the fishing front recently. When I thought I could get out for quick flick, the forecast was for rain or the river was too high or both. I reckon we can blame our local F&G establishment for this and as usual l am lobbying very hard to get a discount on our license for next season. It seems that the usual Kiwi currency of a dozen beer doesn’t seem to work anymore. What’s this country coming to.

When I was a kid we use to be able to buy fish and chips for the whole family for 20 cents. When working I had to get up in morning at 10 o’clock at night, half hour before I went to bed, working 29 hours a day down at Mill and pay for the privilege. Couldn’t afford a car and lived in shoe box in middle of road. It was a hard life. No wading boots or fishing rods in those days. Had to use a hand line with a safety pin and dig up my own worms. They were good days. Young people don’t know they’re alive.
